Matthew S. Holland
Matthew S. Holland was born on June 7, 1966, in Provo, Utah, into a family deeply rooted in both education and faith. He grew up moving around with his family as his father worked in education and church service, later returning to Utah where he spent much of his youth.
After high school, Holland served as a full-time missionary in Scotland for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, an experience that strengthened his lifelong commitment to his faith. He went on to study at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1991. Holland continued his studies at Duke University, earning a master’s and a Ph.D. in political science, further shaping his interest in civic life and American thought.
Matthew has spent his life helping students see education as more than just classes and degrees. From his early years as a teacher and associate professor to his time as president of Utah Valley University from 2009 to 2018, he has been motivated by a genuine love of learning and a strong belief in the power of education to shape lives. As UVU’s president, he worked to strengthen the university while keeping students at the center of every decision, emphasizing character, purpose, and meaningful engagement with the world.
In 2020, Holland was called to serve as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a senior leadership role in the church that has taken him from education to broader service in the faith. In this calling, he has continued to focus on spiritual growth, teaching, and service, drawing on both his academic background and his lifelong devotion to the gospel.
At every stage of his life, Matthew S. Holland has encouraged others to be curious, grateful, and willing to serve. His story reflects a deep belief that education and faith together can help individuals lead meaningful, purpose-filled lives.
