Professor Sarah K. Clark grew up in Benson, Arizona, as the eighth of 13 children. Raised on a farm, there was always a job to do. This work ethic carried with her as she attended the University of Arizona, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and her master’s degree in education with a specialization in language, reading, and culture.
Following her graduation with her master’s degree in 1991, Clark dove into the field of education, filling roles such as classroom teacher, curriculum developer, author and editor, researcher, and university professor. She has published extensively, including over 35 books for classroom use and more than 20 academic journal articles in esteemed publications such as the Journal of Teacher Education and the Journal of Educational Research. Her research focuses on enhancing classroom instruction and helping children thrive by examining the intersection between student, instruction, and teacher.
In 2009, Clark completed her PhD in curriculum and instruction, specializing in teacher education and literacy instruction, at Utah State University (USU). She stayed at USU for the next eight years as a professor, then joined the faculty at BYU where she has been ever since. At BYU, Clark has served as a professor, department chair, and associate dean. She is now the dean of the McKay School of Education, announced March 14, 2025. Amidst her many roles and responsibilities, Clark is driven by a deep care for students and educators alike and is dedicated to helping her students become spiritually strengthened and prepared to be exemplary educators and leaders.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Clark cherishes her role as “Gama” to two grandsons and enjoys activities such as cooking with her husband, hosting gatherings, dancing to 80s music, hiking, and playing volleyball and pickleball. She finds joy and purpose in strengthening her relationship with the Savior and encouraging others to do the same. Her favorite quote (by an unknown author), “His power came as He took on our perspective. Our power comes as we take on His,” encapsulates her approach on finding peace and stability in all aspects of life.
