Authority

Authority in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is ultimately rooted in Jesus Christ. Priesthood authority is the power and authorization God gives us to act in His name, and priesthood keys direct how this authority is used in the Church. This sacred authority guides and governs the Church, allowing members to participate in His work and serve one another.

However, authority involves more than holding a high position or serving in a designated calling. In his 1998 address, Marion D. Hanks describes three specific forms of authority: authority of personality, authority of competence, and authority of integrity—or character. Effective leaders earn trust not through their status but through their good nature, ability to fulfill responsibilities, social awareness, and the example they set.

These addresses explore how authority, both as a sacred responsibility and a means to serve, can be exercised effectively in our lives, no matter what roles we hold. In their discussions of leadership, priesthood, teaching, and personal influence, these speakers consider how authority can be used to guide, strengthen, and bless others. As you explore these speeches, we hope the principles in them will help you in your leadership, teaching, and service efforts.
