“Rise and shout, the Cougars are out!” The chorus of the “Cougar Song” echoes through BYU LaVell Edwards stadium during every home football game. This football program has been a keystone of the university’s culture and community since the early years of the university. Generations of students have filled the stands, “rain or snow,” and millions of fans have tuned in to support the Cougs. But beyond athletic competition, BYU Football has given generations of student-athletes life-changing opportunities for personal and spiritual development. The experiences of players and coaches offer lessons both on and off the field.
This collection includes speeches by players, coaches, and leaders that explore principles of perseverance, service, faith, and personal growth. LaVell Edwards uses the imagery of football to allude to putting on “the whole armor of God,” while S. Gifford Nielsen connects BYU’s fight song with a broader pursuit of purposeful living. Vai Sikahema reflects on how the Lord uses our talents and experiences to bless others, and Kalani Sitake teaches that adversity can be part of God’s plan for us.
These addresses offer a glimpse into the experiences and perspectives of people integral to the history of BYU football. As they discuss competition, adversity, leadership, and faith, the speakers encourage us to consider lessons that shape us in various kinds of pursuits. Athletics can become a setting for learning, service, and personal growth for eager newcomers and lifelong fans alike.
