Allen E. Bergin
Allen E. Bergin’s started his education studying engineering at MIT, but he shifted his focus to instead study psychology at BYU. Graduating with a bachelor’s in psychology from BYU in 1956 and a master’s in 1957, he continued his academic pursuits with a doctorate’s degree from Stanford in 1960. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Psychiatric Institute, Dr. Bergin started his career at Columbia and BYU.
Dr. Bergin’s contributions extend to research, theory, practice, and education, challenging psychological norms and emphasizing the role of values and religion in therapy. His collaborative work, particularly the Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change, co-edited with Sol Garfield, stands as an authoritative source in the field.
Apart from his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Bergin was deeply involved in community service and interfaith activities. He also acted as a mentor, teacher, and presenter at national and international conventions, providing impactful research in the field of psychotherapy. Dr. Bergin and his wife, Marian, a psychotherapist and clinical social worker, raised nine children together.
Dr. Bergin passed away February 15, 2024.
