Michael L. Roberts
As a high school senior, Mike Roberts had his plans set: achieving success on the football field and attending his local university in Washington. However, after a caring bishop reached out and reconnected him with the gospel, he embarked on a new path that changed his life forever. He chose to attend Ricks College (now BYU–Idaho) then shortly after served a mission in southern California. After returning, he enrolled at BYU where he had life-shaping experiences—including meeting his wife, Dana.
Reflecting on this journey, Roberts remarks that “the Lord was with me and my family every step of the way.”1 He witnessed promises from his patriarchal blessing come true as a new branch was established in his hometown, his dad was called to serve in the branch presidency, and his family was sealed in the temple.
After graduating from the BYU Marriott School of Business with a bachelor’s in business administration, Roberts earned an MBA in finance and marketing from Oregon State University. He then spent over twenty years at Hewlett-Packard (HP), holding executive roles in marketing, finance, corporate strategy, and global operations. After retiring from HP and moving to Arizona, he felt prompted to reconnect with BYU—an unexpected change that led him to join the Marriott School of Business in 2013 as assistant dean and director of the Business Career Center.
Since 2020, Roberts has served as managing director of BYU Alumni and External Relations, leading teams in Brand & Creative, special events and ticketing, University Relations, Licensing and Trademark Administration, Aspen Grove, and Alumni Relations. His work helps extend BYU’s mission globally and strengthens the university’s connection with its community. He also serves on several local boards, including the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, United Way of Utah County, and the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Through his experience and leadership, Roberts has influenced the lives of many students at BYU. “The Lord led me back to BYU,” he says, “not only to recognize the important role of this sacred university, but to assist in the great work of developing disciples of Jesus Christ.”2 With his testimony of the Savior’s love, he helps others see that success—at BYU and in life—comes through faith, connection, and divine guidance.
