Mental Health

Mental health is a state of well-being that enables individuals to cope with life’s challenges, recognize their abilities, and contribute positively to their communities (World Health Organization). Our mental health contributes to shaping our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and this topic has become a focus in both secular and religious spaces in our modern era.

Biological factors play a crucial role in mental health. Our brain chemistry, genetics, and hormonal balance impact mood regulation, cognitive function, and emotional resilience. Mental health conditions—such as anxiety and mood disorders—can significantly impact our lives. Seeking professional help and understanding the signs and symptoms are crucial steps toward managing these conditions.

Our faith and spirituality intersect with mental health. Drawing from scripture and Church teachings, we find guidance on how spirituality can improve mental health. The Atonement of Jesus Christ provides hope and healing, emphasizing that no one is beyond redemption. Regardless of our struggles, imperfections, or mental health challenges, we can turn to Him. Christ’s burden is not merely “less bad” than other burdens. It becomes light when we bear it with Him. His grace enables us to carry our burdens and find healing (“Choosing Christ’s Light Burden,” May 2023). The Savior’s empathy—His understanding of our pain and suffering—becomes a source of comfort. We are not alone in our struggles. As we navigate life’s challenges, let us remember that our Savior’s love encompasses our entire being, including our mental well-being.

The speeches in this topic collectively emphasize that mental health matters—it affects our thoughts, feelings, and actions. They also shed light on the transformative power the Atonement of Jesus Christ has in our lives and on our well-being. Additionally, these speeches discuss the biological aspects contributing to mental health challenges and advocate for seeking professional help and a supportive community. As you explore these speeches, we hope you will gain insights and find hope in your personal journey.

Healing = Courage + Action + Grace

Healing is much more than “getting better” or “having our problems go away.” Healing is growth, development, and maturation. In a word, healing is change. It takes time and energy and struggle, but healing teaches us.
